Keep in mind that you make the clothes the clothes don't make you

Keep in mind that you make the clothes the clothes don't  make you:

We're faced with the same dilemma every season: what to keep, what to toss, and what to buy. If you're anything like me, you'll find jeans from two seasons ago, denim tops, raggedy T-shirts, and oh-so-out cargo shorts as you go through your wardrobe and drawers. It's out with the old and in with the new for the upcoming fashion season, particularly when it comes to casual wear.

But what do you look for when you go shopping? Denim remains a staple of the casual wardrobe, but some of the more drastic denim treatments of the past are no longer appropriate. Slubbing is still common, but you should look for embellishment. The story this season isn't so much about rhinestones as it is about embroidery. Look for geometric patterns stitched into women's and men's jeans – the more the better. Look for jeans with triangles down one leg or designer jeans with the designer logo prominently displayed on the front, just below the pocket, for example. Men's black jeans are also making a comeback, so keep your eyes peeled for the chic look of black denim.

Denim shorts are also in this season's selections but opt for a knee-length style instead of the short-shorts. It's a nod to the pedal pusher era, but the shorts are certainly longer than in previous seasons. This applies to both plus and missy sizes.

What about tops now? Solids are the color story for the season, and solids range from vibrant marina blue to coral to a more subdued khaki. T-shirts come in a number of sizes, including tanks, polos, and simple round-neck tees. Designer logos are popular once again, either on the front of T-shirts to make a bold statement, or just below the neckline in the back to make a more subtle statement.

Before you rush to the mall, bear in mind that some younger designers are making waves. Check out the young kid on the block's online offerings. By being among the first to "discover" the next hip mark, you'll get a price break as well as the opportunity to stand out from the crowd.

Also, bear in mind that while you want to be trendy this season, you don't want to look the same as everyone else. Always note that you create the clothes, not the clothes that create you. Here are five ways to personalize your style:

1. Accessorize – What you wear as an accessory says a lot about who you are. Don't go crazy, but pick items that are one-of-a-kind and make you stand out.

2. Attitude is All – You may be dressed in a million-dollar designer gown, but unless you have the courage to pull it off, you'll look dowdy. Keep your head high and know that you belong, no matter what you're wearing – including a pair of women's jeans and a T-shirt.

3. Don't Forget the Shoes – The wrong shoes will completely detract from an otherwise stunning ensemble. Make sure the style of your shoes matches the style of your clothing.

4. Have a good time – Don't be a slave to trends. Have fun with it and don't get too worked up over minor details. Experiment with it. Take a chance. It's likely that you'll be shocked by yourself.

5. Spread the Joy – Do you remember those old clothes from the previous season or year? Donate them to a good cause. Your scavenged items would undoubtedly brighten someone else's day.
